The Secret Forest (part 4)

Who was Susan talking to? Suddenly, Susan yelled,” Gary! Scott! It’s ok! Come on!”.

Gary and Scott looked puzzled. “It’s probably a trap,” whispered Scott. Gary nodded.

“GARY! SCOTT! COME ON!!!!”yelled Susan again. Sarge came running towards the boys. As Gary reached out his hand to pet the dog, Sarge ran a little away from him towards the car. He did this several times.

“He wants us to follow him!”exclaimed Gary.

“Sure! Follow him right to the car!”said Scott, rolling his eyes.

“Scott, Sarge is my dog,” said Gary, frowning, and he is telling me it’s ok. So come on. Let’s go. ”

“Not me!”shouted Scott to Gary as he followed Sarge to the car. Sarge looked back to make sure Gary was following, and then he barked happily as Gary followed close behind.

When they reached the car, Susan opened the door to let them in. Sarge leaped in, out of the rain, into the nice, clean, dry car. Gary got in, too, and tried to pull the door close. It was stuck. Gary peeked out to see why it wouldn’t close and was shocked to see Scott pulling the other way to keep the door open.

“Wait! Don’t close the door! Let me in, “yelled Scott. Gary was shocked. He let go of the handle just as Scott jumped in and pulled the door close.

“You silly boys,” laughed the woman who was driving the car. “That dog of yours has more sense to get out of the rain than both of you combined.”

“Who are you?”asked Scott loudly.

“Scott!” said Susan, frowning. “This is her car, and she is trying to help us. You can at least be polite!”

“I still don’t know who she is,” stated Scott.

“Scott…started Susan.

The women laughed. “Let me try, Susan. My name is Mrs. Davis, and this is my son, Tony. Now,” she added, if you will tell me how to get to your houses, I’ll drive you there.

Just then, there was a crash, and the bridge that went over the river fell. “Oh!” gasped Mrs. Davis.

“How will we get home now?” Scott asked.

“We can’t,” cried Susan.

“Looks like all of you will be staying at our house on Spyglass Hill tonight,” said Mrs. Davis. “We have lots of room.”

I don’t want to stay on Spyglass Hill,” moaned Susan.

The problem was that the house on Spyglass Hill was the Morgan house and…..well…..it was a little creepy, I suppose. Big, towering house, no lights….. And also….Mrs. Davis was from church. And although Gary went to church, he didn’t like it. So inside, he thought that they didn’t need any churchgoers. Scott and Sarge didn’t even really know what church was.

Mrs. Davis looked at the children. They looked scared. So to reassure them, she let them call their parents. All of their parents agreed that it was best if they stayed with Mrs. Davis.

So off to Spyglass Hill, they went. When they arrived, it was really stormy. As they all walked inside, it was really, really dark.

“Uhh…umm…Do you guys have lights?”asked Susan.

“Not yet,” came the reply. Susan moaned. The children waited with Tony while Mrs. Davis went to get a lantern. When she returned, they all silently followed her upstairs. Once upstairs, Mrs. Davis gave them some food. Sarge ate too.

“Are you guys almost finished?” asked Mrs. Davis? “I have a little treat for you when you all are done. The treat was outside. They had a huge balcony, and Scott, Susan, Tony and Mrs. Davis enjoyed the wind blowing.

Gary wanted to escape. “Church people”, he thought. “Who needs them? He tiptoed downstairs and sneaked out the front door with Sarge. He thought he could get home himself. As they neared the bridge they saw that Mrs. Davis was driving the rest of the children to the bridge. Gary and Sarge quickly hid in a ditch. But the roaring of the river and the engine of the car must have scared Sarge, because he ran wildly and blindly towards the river. Once he saw how close he was he tried to stop but then a tree hit him and carried him about halfway. What would happen next?
