Chapter 5-Crashes & Miracles
It was a gloomy day. Rain pelted the train violently. Abigail sighed, extremely bored at the monotonous view outside. Fielder smiled, stopped the train, and took a thick pile of paper, some ink, and a feather pen out of a box beside him. “Here. Perhaps write me a story. You may be surprised to see how much you enjoy it.” Abigail accepted it and let her imagination run wild as Fielder restarted the train. She discovered how beautifully words can paint pictures. Suddenly, the rainy day didn’t seem so dull anymore. “You want to get some rest? It’s getting late.” Fielder suggested after a couple of hours. “No, thank you.” Abigail politely replied. “Alright, suit yourself!” It soon turned dark, and Abigail soundly fell asleep, her pen barely in her hand, and her face pressed against a piece of paper. All of the sudden, the train started jerking violently. Abigail quickly woke up and asked, “What’s happening?” But, before Fielder could answer, The train flipped over and her world turned pitch black.
“Fielder? What happened?” Abigail groggily asked. Silence. “Fielder?” Still no response. Abigail tried to get up but a broken leg prevented her from doing so. A chilling wave of fear suddenly hit her. She realized she was alone in a forest. She was an escapee so if anyone found her, she might become a slave again. She couldn’t contact anyone. And she couldn’t even walk. For the first time, since her father died, she broke into sobs that shook her body. She cried until her eyes wouldn’t shed anymore tears. In desperation, she prayed, hoping the God of her parents could and would help her. When she opened her eyes, a handsome, young man in trousers and a plaid shirt asked her, in a foreign accent, “Do you need to get to Canada?” Abigail blinked in surprise, but answered, “Um, yes, sir but my leg is broken.” Do not worry”, he replied calmly, “Everything will be taken care of.” Feeling the need to introduce herself, she said, “By the way, my name is Abigail.” “Pleased to make your acquaintance. I’m Marcus.” With that he started walking toward an expensive-looking wagon. Abigail got up to join him and, to her shock, her leg was healed. As she got into the wagon, she smiled and thought to herself, Perhaps the God of my parents is worth believing.
