Olive Branches, Chapter 29

Monday, September 14 – Omari Brown

“Mawwi!! Mawwi more!!”

I smile at my baby sister Laila as she tugs my sweater. She’s trying to say Omari, haha.

“Here’s some cheerios Lai Lai.” I say with a grin.

My little sister is always happy.

She’s full of pure joy. She’s not even two yet but I can barely remember what life was like before she was born.

I think she looks a lot like me, to be honest. We have the same dimples, and she has the same bright brown eyes that I do. It’s so funny,  I really wanted her to be a little brother. But I’m glad she’s not now…

I slowly reach for the last bit of cheerios and pat her little curls.

“Bye Lai!”

Laila giggles and smiles, waving her chubby hands up and down.

“Bye mom!”

My step mom hugs me as I’m halfway out the door.

“Wait, come here Omar.” She says with a stern voice.

A million thoughts flash through my head as I wonder if I had done something bad.

“Stand right next to me.”

I stand next to my step mom and peer at her for a few seconds. A slow grin comes over her face.

Wow, I’m taller than her now!!

My stepmom is 5’4”, and I’m a bit over shoulder to shoulder with her.

This is going to be a great day, I can already feel it.
