Happy holidays, Guidesters! I hope your days have been filled with warmth, good food, and lots of good stories. 😃
As we get into the new year, I think it’s a perfect time to share a new feature in the Guide Magazine, and how you can contribute to it!
If you’ve been getting print Guide magazines lately, you’ll notice there’s a new section in it called Illustories. These are a collection of faith-based stories with endearing characters in a graphic novel style. With cliffhanger endings and new parts every week, they’re captivating, lighthearted and a great addition to the magazine.
Good news for all Guidesters who love art and/or writing; Guide editor Randy Fishell is accepting submissions to the Illustory category now! Here are some guidelines if you’d like to submit an Illustory:
- Your storylines can be true or fictional, but they should be realistic and have a clear Biblical principle/learning point.
- Your Illustory should have up to 8 parts, with cliffhangers after each section. Each part should be about 6-8 panels long.
- Some topics that you can use in your Illustories are: friendship, home challenges, school situations, homeschool life, mental health and physical health challenges, and boy-girl situations. But don’t feel restricted to that list: if you have a brand-new idea that’s realistic, relatable, and teaches a Biblical principle, go for it!
- If the Guide editors choose your Illustories to appear in the magazine, you will get a payment. But if not, you can still post your story on this website’s story section.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! I’m so excited to see what you Guidesters come up with and see some of your stories on the website and in the magazine.
Happy writing and illustrating!

Where can I submit it?
Great question! You can use the usual story portal on this website to submit both scripts and sample drawings: just remember to select “for print” for your idea to be considered and add “Illustory Idea” to your title.
Randy Fishell says, “If someone has some illustration samples they wish to send, they can scan their sample of a panel or two and submit it the same way. I am looking forward to receiving some ideas and possible sample drawings! Be assured that they don’t need to be professional quality—just decent enough for readers to enjoy! 😊”
Nice. How do I separate the parts? Do I add the paragraph where it explains what happened last time or will they add that for me?
Hmm, I think for the script you might write “Week 1”, “Week 2” and so on over the relevant parts. I believe the Guide editors would formulate the quick summary of the previous part.
