Abigail was beaming as she walked up the narrow, carpeted stairs to her room. As she was walking, Marie’s words echoed in her mind. “You’re free.” Abigail hugged herself joyfully. She opened the door and gasped in surprise. In her room was a silver-rimmed mirror above her cozy bed. The room was a pale lavender. Next to the bed was a white nightstand with a beautiful lamp and a Bible. Also, there was a nicely furnished desk and a large chair in the far-left corner of the room.
Abigail exclaimed aloud, “This room is better than my childhood dreams!” Having had a poor childhood as a slave, to her, she was living in luxury. She squealed with delight as she dove into the soft, feather comforter. She sighed contently, then walked toward the window and devoured the heavenly view of the lake behind the mission compound.
Abigail then decided to explore the city. But she realized that she couldn’t go out in her worn-out clothing. Maybe Marie has some clothes I can wear. Abigail thought to herself. So, a bit self-conscious, she walked down the stairs into the lobby. She scanned the room and spotted Marie. Abigail then voiced her request. “Oh, yes”, Marie replied. “I have a bag filled with clothes my daughters used to wear. Help yourself.” Abigail dug into the bag and found a pale green and pink dress, a straw hat, and other things. She changed, looked at herself in a mirror, and twirled in pleasure. She went outside with a parasol and a spirit of enthusiasm. But, just two blocks away from the mission compound, a steel hand clamped over her mouth and another hand wrapped around her, suffocating her. Abigail then felt a blinding pain shooting through her head and her world turned dark.
