Where had Susan and Sarge gone?
Scott and Gary began to look for them. They heard something or someone calling, but they weren’t sure what it was.
“I wonder where are they,” said Gary. They started in the direction of the noise. Then, as they came closer to the noise, they both stopped.
“It’s coming from behind that big rock,” whispered Scott. “Boost me up so that I can up and over it.”
“Yeah, ” agreed Gary. “Just in case someone is trying to trap us.”
“More”, whispered Scott. “More, just a little more.” But his whispering turned into an ear splinting yell. “Stop! Gary, STOPPPPPP!”,Scott yelled. Scott had gone up and over the rock. There was a bark and leaves crunching. Also, there was a girl’s scream. Scott and Susan had been found.
Gary ran around the rock to see them in a hole in the ground, all staring at him. He started laughing uncontrollably. He couldn’t stop but was now laughing even harder. That’s when it happened. The ground that he was standing on started to slip. Gary lost his balance and started falling into the hole. Scott, Susan, and Sarge all scooted out of the way as he landed in the middle of the hole.
Gary scratched his head as he asked,” Where are we?”
“In a hole!”laughed Susan. “I fell in while I was trying to get Sarge out.” As Susan shuffled, she kicked some leaves along with a little of the “wall” inside the hole.
“Wait! What is that?”Gary asked as he came closer to the part Susan had kicked. Scott came, too.
“It looks like some sort of an hole”, said Scott. Gary grabbed a rock and pushed it into the tiny hole. It got stuck.
“See, it isn’t even a hole,” Susan said smugly. The boys ignored her. Gary gave it an extra push. The rock disappeared. Gary thought he heard some sort of a thund.
“Gary,” said Scott. “In the bag that you brought, there was a shovel. Boost me out of here, and I’ll go get it. Gary helped Scott out of the hole. He was back in no time. “I brought this flashlight too.”
Before long, the hole was big enough to climb through.
“I’m not going into that spooky place.”, announced Susan. She was ignored. Scott shone the flashlight around. “It’s cold in her,” said Susan.
“So?”, asked Scott.
“Well, I wasn’t about to stay there all by myself,” said Susan.
“Why not?”, laughed Gary. Susan glared at him.
“Wait! What was that noise?”, gasped Scott. They all stopped to listen. It’s sounded like a door opening on old, rusty hinges. They all looked up at a set of stairs that led to a door. Susan gasped as a strange glow filled the doorway. What was it?
