“Step out of the car, girls,” he said in a very foreboding tone. Angelina and Alyssa did as they were told and stepped out of the car. “Do you have any idea what you’ve just done?!” Mr. Sanders continued.
Alyssa was terrified and shaking, unable to get out an understandable response. Angelina, on the other hand, decided to push her luck and play dumb.
“And what would that be, sir?” she said nonchalantly.
”What would that be?’ YOU’VE RUINED MY CAR!” the man yelled. Suddenly, Angelina didn’t feel so bold anymore and quieted up immediately.
Mr. Sanders paced back and forth, trying to figure out his next best move. Meanwhile, the girls were trying to figure out theirs.
“An-Angie, w-w-what do we do n-n-now?” Alyssa whispered to Angelina, stammering. The teen didn’t know what to say.
“I’m afraid I need to report you two,” Mr. Sanders finally said as he reached for his pants pocket to get his cell phone. “What are your names?”
“Well, sir, my name is-,” Alyssa started to say, before being interrupted by Angelina, who apparently now had an idea. “RUN!!!” she shouted, grabbing Alyssa’s arm and hurrying to her house.
Mr. Sanders attempted to run after them, but it was no use due to his age. “Come back here, you two!!” he yelled as the two girls got smaller and smaller as they ran away.
When they reached her house, Angelina opened the door and slammed it behind her. “Hi honey, you’re home a little later than usual. Some event today?” Angelina’s mom greeted her.
“Sorry, Mom, no time to chat, Lyssa and I have, uh, homework!” she said quickly, running past her mom so that they could quickly get to her bedroom. Once they were inside, Angelina closed the door and then the two friends collapsed on her bed, out of breath.
When they had finally caught her breath, Alyssa spoke first. She looked at Angelina in tears and asked, ‘What did we just do?”
For the first time in her life, Angelina didn’t know. “I-I-I don’t know, I was just trying to pull a harmless prank, that’s all!”
“‘Harmless prank’, huh?” Alyssa laughed, hysterical. “That wasn’t a harmless prank!” she yelled, springing off the bed. “What we just did was a crime!!” Angelina started to say something, but Alyssa stopped her. “No, I’m sick and tired of your excuses! Avery and I have always told you that one of these days your ‘pranks’ would end up getting you into trouble. And I guess it seems that we were right, because now look where we are!! We’re hiding in your room, after we crashed a car!” Alyssa sank to the floor and broke down, sobbing.
Angelina tried to resist, but she couldn’t help it, and she broke down crying too. Seeing her friend weeping as a result of something that she did made her feel something inside, an uncomfortable feeling that she hadn’t felt in a long, long time. It was guilt. They wouldn’t even be in this mess if she had just decided not to touch the car in the first place. And to make matters worse, she had managed to convince her friend to be an accomplice to her crime. An aforementioned question floated around in her head as they both sat there, crying; “What are we going to do?”
