Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Rated: PG
Release Date: 5/22/2009
Running Time: 1 hour, 45 minutes

Larry Daley, former night guard at the Museum of Natural History, has moved up in the corporate world. His inventions have made him rich, and his schedule keeps him busy. He barely has time to think about his friends at the museum who magically come to life at night (thanks to an ancient Egyptian centerpiece)—that is, until the Museum of Natural History is closed for renovations and they are moved into storage at the Smithsonian Institution. When the magic centerpiece moves with them, the Smithsonian exhibits also come to life, leaving Larry’s friends at the mercy of scary historical figures such as Al Capone and Ivan the Terrible. In order to try to save his friends, Larry must leave the corporate world behind and join forces with Amelia Earhart, Abraham Lincoln, and others. The battle begins . . .

What I liked about this movie:

While this movie would never make my top ten list, there were some funny moments, and I thought it was a cool way to make history come alive. Not everything made sense, but the characters were interesting. It will be fun someday in heaven to meet people from history, including the people we admire from the Bible, and find out what they were really like. I’m afraid the Apostle Paul might think I talk too much. J

The main character, Larry, seems to have “lost his way” in his busy new world, but when an emergency arises, his commitment to his friends takes over. I think it’s cool to see an example of what real friendship is.  Especially when you’re a kid, it seems like friendships can be pretty precarious (which means they don’t have much of a foundation and could end at any time).  I’ve seen people be best friends one day and enemies the next. Real friendships don’t work like that. You don’t stop being friends with someone just because they upset you; when you aren’t getting along, that’s a time for you to practice things like good communication skills, unselfishness, and forgiveness. Learning to be a good friend is another step toward being a mature person.

The little figurines in this movie are the epitome (a perfect example) of courage. Sure, they are the size of a shoelace, but that doesn’t stop them from doing their part in the battle—and they are actually able to do some good. It was a nice little (ahem!) reminder that though we might feel small and insignificant, there’s a part for us to play in the ultimate battle between good and evil.

What concerned me about this movie:

Amelia Earhart’s character is very forward—in other words, she makes sure Larry’s character knows that she is extremely, exceedingly, very highly attracted him to a large degree (get the picture?). While poor Larry is doing his best to save his friends, it seems all Amelia wants to do is play kissy-face. I see a lot of girls shamelessly chasing after guys and making fools of themselves. Girls, don’t do this! Protect your reputation and be someone guys can respect, not someone they joke about when you’re not around.

There were some battle scenes with mild violence (no blood), and a few instances of bad language (especially the use of God’s name in a careless way).

At one point Larry steals a guard’s ID badge and impersonates a guard.

Teddy Roosevelt decides it’s “better to tell a small lie than deliver a painful truth” and doesn’t tell the truth to the other exhibit figures about what is going to happen to them.

While I’m not making recommendations for whether or not you should see this movie (that’s for you and your parents to decide!), here are some “thinking” questions:

1.     Teddy Roosevelt, in the movie, tells Larry: “Sometimes it’s better to tell a small lie than deliver a painful truth.” Do you think this is true or false?  Several times in the Bible, God’s people did dishonest things. For examples of this, read 1 Samuel 21:10-15; 2 Samuel 14:1-22; and Esther 2:20. Do you think God was OK with their dishonesty, since the end result was good? Why or why not? How does this apply to us?
2.     Abraham Lincoln once said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” A lot of people don’t know that Honest Abe was actually paraphrasing Mark 3:25 when he said that. What do you think that statement means when it is applied to your country? Your church? Your home? How can those entities be divided? What kinds of consequences result?

3.     In the movie there is an ancient Egyptian centerpiece that causes the exhibits to come alive at night. We understand from the Bible that God doesn’t approve of magic. However, in the Bible there is a strange story about a prophet’s bones bringing a dead man back to life.  Check it out in 2 Kings 13:21. Why do you think the man came back to life? Do you think there was power in the prophet’s bones? Why or why not?

This movie was all right

I think the underworld was just put in there to tell about what the Egyptians thought, it sorta tells their history. I laughed and laughed at this movie- the whole thing about a muesum coming to life was really exciting- it showed a lot of history...

Nickname: bubblesandcheese
lol :D hilarious movie!

Guys, stop talking about teddy roosevelt. he was a good guy. (Im not alking about the wax one)

Nickname: hanhan
I have seen it and I thought it was great. As long you don't focus on the bad stuff I think the movie is awesome. Just don't to what they do in the movie and I think its fine.

I have already seen this movie, and I enjoyed it very much. But as you say, Amelia Earheart did do a lot of hinting to like-liking Larry. And I don't like Larry when he steals the ID card. Or when the characters swear. The other thing is, is that there is no such thing as a tablet that can open "The Door to the Underworld," as only God can do what He pleases with life. So all in all, it was a cute movie, with a bad aftertaste.

This was a funny movie. But it had a few darker elements than the first one such as the Pharaoh's army from the underworld and some curse words and violence. on a scale from 1 to 10: about 7.

Nickname: kid4God
this movie is great! there''s not a lot of bad stuff in it and it has an epic, yet also funny storyline!

Nickname: Godsgrl

Nickname: The Accent was Funny
haahaha "Brrunden! Come on in man!" that was great. i miss that movie

Nickname: Hi, Im a Geek
Well to me this movie was plain silly, and the refrences to histories evil leaders such as Al Capone, or Ivan the terrible were poorly done, General Custard was a goof off, and Amelia Earheart was poorly portrayed (I know alot about aviation, and if you ask me EarHeart was more serious about the enjoyment of the thrill of flying than a lovey dubby romance) I was sooo offended by the Darth Vader in the movie(im also a starwars geek too XD) they totaly ruined his character (by the way, darth vader is supposed to be a gloomy scary guy who had a hard life) they picked him and made him look goofy, sad to say the writer of the move had a sence of humor that is very degraded, and simply unimaginative. And the plot is screwed up, during half the movie my brain went strait to total confusion, Especialy with The guy who portrayed Nepoleon.

I agree with Melanie. ALthough the movie is really funny, I was still a little concerened about the tablet. Still, it would be on my top 10 list.

Nickname: markakp
Are you kidding Melanie, if all girls were straight forward like Amelia in the movie, life would be so much easier for everyone. It's because of the girls mentality that they should try to never show that they like a guy that some people never ever get together. I wish everyone would just be straight forward.

Nickname: mrsjonas2
I completley agree with barstownian there is a lot of witchcraft going on. I'm not even aloud to watch a the Narnia movies.Oh, and Melanie can u do a review on Band Slam for me, thanks!

Nickname: haha107
i havn't seen that movie but thx 2 Ms. Bockmann I'll check with my parents first.

Nickname: Skeptic Dude
The Egyptian piece that has it's "magic" when into taken into christain and figurative context, it's like a resurection which is what like mealnie said about heaven. And i wouldn't worry about john talking too much. I'd worry about Job!

Nickname: Mariella
All in all I think it was a cute movie. You forgot to mention in your review that there was a part of the movie where the Egyptian pharaoh actually brings in characters from the "underworld". It was a funny movie although the first one was a bit better. I laughed the whole time while watching. Thanks for the review!

Nickname: LOLJ
I think that to some peoples, this movie can be offensive, but it really depends on how much you know and believe. While this movie doesn't strengthen the religious spirit, it can't budge your love for God if you really believe in his teachings.

Nickname: Big Mama
Yes, have heard many a time that SDA church are Legalistic?! Regard that as a compliment. Was Elijah on Mount Carmel also legalistic with the prophets of Baal or was he prepared to follow God all the way without the little compromise here-and-there? We are in the endtime battle? do not compromise! We must prepare to stand NOW or we will perish with the wicked! God tells us to come out of Babylon not to go back everynow and again. Because if we do, we are also part of the wicked!

Nickname: >:/
I think everyone should stop hating. It's a movie!! There are plenty of bad things out there to watch but this is definitely NOT one of them!

Nickname: lovetofly
I have not seen the movie but it looks interesting. Thanks forgiven for commenting on all the bad parts. Also, thanks Jessica for commenting on how funny and interesting it was. I will take everything into perspective and decide wether or not to see it

Nickname: jonas fan
havn't seen but i heard that jb play the little cherubs

Nickname: John
Come on, Melaine. You can't expect a movie to be perfect. What's wrong with impersonating someone? I pretend to be Randy all the time.

Nickname: SmileyFace
i think that the first movie is great and although i haven't seen this movie yet, i'm guessing that this movie would be just as good.

Nickname: jet
he is so supid i love Night at the museum it is a good move i want everybody to see it

Nickname: crissygal1
this movie involves witchcraft if you havent noticed and is sinful to watch.

Nickname: hmm
i dont think you other ppl who are saying coments like the third comment like stop hateing she is just giving a good reveiw i have not seen the movie but now im not sure if i want to because of this exelent revew thank you

Nickname: WOW
well guyz, for the ppl who say the stuff about witch craft and demons and stuff (ESPECIALLY THE M.J. ONE) I strongly disagree. God dosen't want us killing ourselves trying to follow every little thing. Just have him in your heart and it wil be like a sheild from Evil. BE IN THE WORLD, WITHOUT BEING OF THE WORLD. Get it?

Nickname: Jessica
I saw this movie in theaters. It was hilarious! I think it was better than the first and is one of my favorites!

Nickname: Circle
I saw the first movie, and I saw this one--but the first was WAY better. It had better humor, better developed characters, and THERE WAS NO ROMANCE!! The villian was stupid, and for pete's sake, Amelia was a STATUE! Although I wouldn't buy this movie just because it was incredibly good, I figure it wasn't on my list of "Least Liked movies this year" either.

Nickname: jex
terrier Ok You are right about that litesn kids litsen

Nickname: jex
Forgiven That is a little bit to much info/ ..................................... OK...... :O :D :( :H

Nickname: jex
Even though i never seen this (11 yr boy) true it is really evil like ...... pokemon and ygioh (i dont know how to spell it anymore) and other stuff. plus the music is the #1 thing to (even though it has nothing to do with the movie anyway bye. :D

Nickname: ashley
i already saw the movie and it is really funny

Nickname: dwarfman101
even though i hav'nt seen this movie, you have given me something to think about.

Nickname: pianoplayer52
it was ok the humor was the same over and over! SO IT WASN'T THAT FUNNY!

Nickname: Jo-Enid
I liked the it.

Nickname: daniel
i didnt like this movie

Nickname: animalmania
I liked this movie because it had lots of action and it taught people to obey.

Nickname: thisisme
I know some people are saying that the cuss words and the kissing were a little inappropriate and I agree. But I don't think calling the centerpiece witchcraft is quite right. I think it had more to do with mythology and history. Though, they did take it to the extreme. I don't know. My opinion might be wrong.

Nickname: Joycelyn
ok lets not get so legalistic about this movie that is why people look at the seventh day adventis church the way they do because some look at things way to legalisticaly so stop, breath, and think about this as some have said about the review yes there is some magic but think just becouse there is magic dose not mean that we will start practising whitchcraft legalisim is the very thing that got the jewish preists so stop dwelling on the little thing ok thats for God to worry about not us and further more just because you wach a movie that is not g rated dose not mean that you are bound for hell it is all about your relationship with Christ

Nickname: Cutie 01
I totally wanna watch it so does my mom it looks so cool gotta wach it.

Nickname: jodephus
Doesn't magic go against everything we have been taught? This movie glorifies Egyptian religious practice including idol worship. Am I wrong?

Nickname: courage2stand
i thought that it was a really cute movie but it suprised me the way that it cussed and used Gods name in vain... especially since my little brothers &&nd sisters were allowed to watch it.. i think it might confuse them into saying words like that because they won't know any better :( i don't think anyone expected the cuss words..

Nickname: ronnoc
i thought it totally rocked

Nickname: terrier
I'm not going to watch this moivie at all!! because like Barstownian said its a form of witch craft. And its better to tell the truth than tell a litttle lie (qoute TEDDY ROOSEFELT).AND WE ALL KNOW THAT!!! Like Melanie said the bible doesn't permit magic but if we as young people watch it over and over again we will start practisesing it.LIke Sabrina the Teenage witch,if you watch this like that you will start doing it!! Did you know that some moivie stars and singers let demons enter them.Like MIchale Jackson!! (who died recently).

Nickname: Forgiven
I did not like the when teddy Roosevelt said a small lie is better then a painful truth. God told us not to lie! It is one of the Ten Commandments. There was also that scene where thy went into the b and w picture and Larry kissed the girl. That was a bit over top.

Nickname: penguinandhamster
I've seen this movie and I agree with everything on this review. I enjoyed this this movie very much. Very good review.

Nickname: Neci
i've seen the first 1 and it was ok. if i got the chance i think i would c this 1 but i don't think it would be one of my favoerite movies.

Nickname: Barstownian
I am a 15 year-old guy. I myself haven't seen the movie, but I believe what you say. Uh didn't you forget about how the "egyptian centerpiece" magically makes everything come to life is...well, a form of witchcraft.

Nickname: jjekins
its a awesome move stop hating

Nickname: coolerno1
i think both of the movies are great!

Nickname: animalkid2000
