Where were you born?

Glendale, California

What was your first job?
When I was about 12 years old, my first job was picking apples at an apple orchard in South Lancaster, Massachusetts. I would work for two or three hours after school and make $20 a week. I was loaded. I didn't know what to do with so much money.

How did you meet your spouse?
I met my wife, Ivette, at Andrews University, where we were studying together. After graduation we got married. Our parents knew each other when they were living and studying in Cuba.

What is it like being a columnist for Guide?
I love working with Guide! It's a lot of fun writing about God’s artwork . . . nature! One of my favorite parts is when I get to travel around the country doing "LIVE! and Muddy" presentations and meeting many of you at your churches. I also like going in the Guide chat rooms once in a while and seeing what you guys are talking about!

What's your favorite Bible story?
My favorite Bible story is the story of Noah. I love how after thousands of years we can still see tons of evidence of how the global Flood reshaped the surface of our planet.

What is your favorite Bible verse?
Philippians 4:13 is one of my favorites. It's the one that says that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Do you have some big challenges ahead? Let God strengthen you!

When you were Guide age, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be be an inventor.

If you were president for a day, what would you change?
I’d clean up the Internet and get rid of all the destructive things people are allowed to legally buy/sell, such as cigarettes, alcohol, violent video games, weapons, etc.

What are your hobbies?
My favorite hobby is traveling. I've been to 49 states and 52 countries on six continents. It's an amazing world out there. (Will someone please invite me to speak in Alaska? LOL.)

What is your favorite veggie food item?
My favorite fruit is watermelon, the seedless kind.
My favorite veggie is home-grown tomatoes.
My favorite veggie meat is Stripples.

What's your favorite junk food item?
Pizza. Thin New York style—the big floppy slices that require two hands to pick up.

Do you speak any other languages?
I speak English, Spanish, and French. I grew up speaking English and Spanish at home. Then when I was in college I went to study in France for a year. I'd like to learn Portuguese next.

What is your favorite clothing store?
I don't have a favorite store—I just like anything with lots of pockets!

What are your nicknames?
Since I started working with Guide . . . The Mud Guy!

What’s your secret talent?
I don't know if it's a "secret," but I like working with puppets.

What’s the best piece of advice your mom has ever given you?
My mom told me to always be very careful picking friends because they could affect the rest of my life. Great advice.

Do you have pets?
My yard is a zoo full of wild animals: deer, foxes, coyotes, snakes, turtles, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, raccoons, and birds.

What’s the most amazing thing God’s ever done for you?
I'm amazed how God led me from being an architect to doing full-time creative ministry work. Working for God is the best!
